Short Story Writing Competition

​SHHS short story competition aims to foster the development and love of creative writing. It is open to all students enrolled at SHHS in Years 7 to 10. The competition will be convened by the Teacher Librarian Ms Costello.

The competition closes on Friday 19 November

The competition is divided into two categories, each of which has a signature word which must be used in the story in some capacity. 
It provides a guide to the theme of the story and can play a major role or be a small feature.

The Year 7 to 8 signature word is GROWTH

The Year 9 to 10 signature word is UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTERS

Winning students from each category receive a book prize valued at $50 and their entries will be published in the school newsletter and available for viewing on the Library and school websites.

Entry fee is $1.00


The Entry Form and Marking Rubric can be downloaded below or collected from the school Library.

All submissions must be handed to the Library by end of day Friday 19 November


IMPORTANT: Please do not put your name anywhere on your short story. Your name and year must only appear on your entry form which is to be attached to your story.

Terms and Conditions:

1.    The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into

  2.    The marking criteria is available for all competitors from the library or can be downloaded from:
http://www.cpahslibrary.org/short-story-writing-competition.html

3.    All entrants must be currently enrolled and attending SHHS

4.    Entries must not exceed:
      a.    600 words for Year 7 & 8
      b.    800 words for Year 9 & 10

5.    Entries must be typed or neatly hand written on A4 paper (one side only). Use both 1.5 line spacing and standard font size (size 12).

6.    Signature word is EMPATHY for Year 7 and 8  and UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTERS  for Year 9 and 10            

7.    The signature word must be featured somewhere in the story. It can play a major role or be a small feature in your story.

8.    One entry per student.


9.    Student’s names must not appear on the manuscript, only as part of the entry form. Each entry will be allocated an entry number by library staff on receipt of entry.

10. Entries are to be received no later than 3 pm onf the advertised closing date Friday 19 November.
 No late entries.

11. Co-written entries will be disqualified.

12. Copying an existing story is plagiarism and is against the Law. If plagiarism occurs the entrant will be disqualified and their parents notified. This applies to plot as well as content.

13. Copyright remains with the author.

14. The author’s name and year group must appear only on the entry form.

15. Page numbers must be applied in the following way e.g. 1/2, 2/2 etc.

16. No responsibility will be accepted for any misplaced work.

17. The winning short stories will be published in the school newsletter and on the school webpage.

18. The winners will receive their awards at a Formal Assembly.

19. Prizes may vary each year and may be in the form of books, vouchers or DVDs.
