In this module students deepen their understanding of how texts represent individual and collective human experiences. They examine how texts represent human qualities and emotions associated with, or arising from, these experiences. Students appreciate, explore, interpret, analyse and evaluate the ways language is used to shape these representations in a range of texts in a variety of forms, modes and media.
Students explore how texts may give insight into the anomalies, paradoxes and inconsistencies in human behaviour and motivations, inviting the responder to see the world differently, to challenge assumptions, ignite new ideas or reflect personally. They may also consider the role of storytelling throughout time to express and reflect particular lives and cultures. By responding to a range of texts they further develop skills and confidence using various literary devices, language concepts, modes and media to formulate a considered response to texts.

Students study one prescribed text and a range of short texts that provide rich opportunities to further explore representations of human experiences illuminated in texts. They make increasingly informed judgements about how aspects of these texts, for example context, purpose, structure, stylistic and grammatical features, and form shape meaning. In addition, students select one related text and draw from personal experience to make connections between themselves, the world of the text and their wider world. (NESA 2018)
What are Human Experiences?
The term “human experiences” is central to the module. Though it may initially seem very vague and confusing, human experiences can encompass an infinite amount of events, emotions and situations and are, thererfore, difficult to define.
Most broadly, it is the life encounters of an individual or a wider group that shapes the human psyche in one or more ways. Examples of “human experiences” include but are not limited to:

Standard English Prescribed Text - Billy Elliot Film
The study of the prescribed text, Billy Elliot, will help deepen student understanding of how texts represent individual and collective human experiences. Students should focus on the context of 1980’s Britain and how this is depicted through the emotions and experiences of the characters in Billy Elliot. Students will need to analyse a range of smaller texts and through investigation of their textual structure, language and stylistic features, they should deconstruct how common and individual human experiences are illuminated in the texts.
Responding to a range of texts will help you further develop your skills and confidence using various literary devices, language concepts, modes and media to formulate a considered response to texts. As this module requires differentiation based on the course being delivered, teaching and learning activities may need to be modified by the teacher to ensure that they effectively meet the needs of their cohort.

A study and analysis of Stephen Daldry’s film Billy Elliot (2000) will enable students to deepen their understanding of how the film represents individual and collective human experiences of adversity, loss, social limitations, as well as self-discovery, self-expression, personal freedom and transcendence. The film represents human qualities of resilience, loyalty, courage and moral integrity, and emotions of grief, fear, anger and love associated with, or arising from, these experiences. The film also explores anomalies, paradoxes and inconsistencies in human behaviour and motivations that arise from social pressures, conflicting identities, divided loyalties, and moral uncertainty.
The film Billy Elliot raises a number of social issues and positions the responder to see the wider world differently and challenges assumptions about class and gender identities to ignite new ideas about history, politics, social justice and art. The film’s narrative construction helps us to consider the role of storytelling throughout time, and how the film expresses and reflects particular lives and subcultures within the context of the 1984-5 UK miners' strike (CCE 2018) .

Advanced English Prescribed Text - 1984 by George Orwell
For this unit, students explore the prescribed text Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell and a range of different texts in a variety of forms, modes and media and consider how purpose, perspective and context influence the way that these individual and collective human experiences are represented. This exploration will further develop students’ skills to make informed judgements about texts examined and evaluated in class and their related text.
With Nineteen Eighty-Four and its representation of the human experience as the central focus, the key aspects that impact on the of the individual and collective human experiences:
• Having the courage to speak out
• Overt use of power and control – ‘the intoxication of power’ (George Orwell).
• The loss of personal freedom
• Destruction of truth and morality
• Mind control
• Subversion of human relationships and trust
• A culture of fear and mistrust
• Rewriting of history
The selected short texts will feature composers, like Orwell, who express their concerns about something that they consider will have a significant and often detrimental impact on the human experience. These composers provide provocative insights into the anomalies, paradoxes and inconsistencies in human behaviour and motivations; thus, inviting the students to see the world differently, to challenge assumptions, consider new ideas and reflect personally on what this means for their experiences. Students are provided with opportunities to develop greater empathy for the attitudes and opinions of others by interacting with and interrogating a range of texts (Yager 2018).
Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four is widely viewed as a response to the Cold War period. 1984 is described as dark, dystopian, science fiction satire that is both a puzzle about the history of Communist Russia and a warning against totalitarianism. Analysis and discussion of selected passages focuses the representation of totalitarianism and raises questions about the relevance of propaganda, socialism and capitalism to the present. Analysis of Winston’s story,examines the themes of conformity, dissent, surveillance and technology (Centre for Continuing Education 2019).
