Select is the 3rd step in the Research Process

In this step we use critical thinking to Evaluate sources

We should ask:
• How relevant is the information I have found?
• How credible is the information I have found?
• What information can I leave out?

• How will I record the information I need?

Picture
In the Select Stage students should be selective about their information sources

Information skills
Students should:

• review the purpose of the task
• skim read each source for information relevant to the task
• use keywords to locate useful information within sources (ctrl + f)
• identify only the information that relates to the task
• SKIM read or Survey the opening paragraph and any headings in the text

• Filter and discard irrelevant information
• evaluate the credibility and reliability of each source

• decide whether information is closer to fact or opinion
• identify inconsistency and bias in sources
• bookmark or add to favourites selected websites for future reference and for your bibliography
