Jiri Kylian - Sarabande
Sarabande is also one of Kylián’s Black and White ballets. Created in 1990 the work features six male dancers and is composed of various scenes. These scenes are linked together by an exploration of the concept of masculinity. The dancers display various forms of masculine aggression and rigid self-constraint through dynamic strength and sustained control, highlighting the sheer human physicality involved in the execution of this work. Kylián also touches upon issues of vulnerability, respect, sexuality and frivolity. The incorporation of visual effects – predominately props and lighting – alongside Bach’s Partita for Violin and sound design by Dick Heuff (which includes the dancers’ own vocal input) produces an engaging and atmospheric work (Sydney Opera House 2013)
