Cathy Costello
Cathy successfully completed Masters of Education (Teacher Librarianship) early 2017 with approval to teach Library Secondary granted in April of the same year. Masters units studied:
- Introduction to Teacher Librarianship - Resourcing the Curriculum
- Describing Educational Resources - Digital Citizenship in Schools
- ICT for Innovative Practice - Teacher Librarian as Leader
- Introduction to Educational Research - Professional Experience and Portfolio
As Teacher Librarian, Cathy views her role as that of teacher, first and foremost. She is passionate about school libraries leading learning and enterprise skills within the changing information landscape of our modern digital age.
Cathy is excited by the possibilities and challenges that curriculum and technological changes are bringing to the role of Teacher Librarian. She recognises that, after quality classroom instruction, an effective Teacher Librarian is the most important factor influencing student achievement in any school. With this in mind, she is determined to leverage her specialist knowledge, skills and experience to make a vital contribution towards supporting student success.
She is regarded by her peers as a leader in the field of Teacher Librarianship and has been invited to present at various Teacher Librarian professional learning seminars:
- panelist for discussion forum on Future Focused Libraries at School Library Association NSW annual conference - Sydney October 2016
- presented Practical support for beginning Teacher Librarians webinar via Adobe Connect for NSW Teacher Librarian Network meeting - May 2016

Cathy has also published this virtuallibrary.info website to complement and supplement the school library’s physical resources. It also functions as an instructional teaching tool when collaboratively teaching. Additionally, the website is an information source for Information Management and Digital Literacy, various teaching and learning tools and for curriculum support.
In April 2018, Cathy was elected the coordinator for the South Western Sydney School Library Network (SWSSLN). The committee collaboratively designs professional learning conferences for Teacher Librarians and library School Administrative Officers each term. See http://swsrtls.weebly.com
